The 2nd match of the season saw H&B travel to Lewes who play a league above and have a squad of players twice the size of Hastings. This was used to Lewes' advantage as H&B had 15 men to Lewes’ 33; this enabled Lewes to rotate the players as H&B boys tired.
H&B had their usual slow start and found themselves down 30 points with only 20 minuets on the clock. A harsh talking to by Captain Dominic Barker woke up the forwards and soon H&B displayed the type of play any team would have been proud of. As the forwards started to rumble up the park first Harrison Cox, playing the best he’s ever played, then Tommy Craig stormed the Lewes defence. This then enabling the backs to move the ball causing Lewes to defend. Soon H&B’s powerful Lock Harrison Cox bulldozed the ball over the line for H&B’s first points of the season. Converted by Ollie Fisher.
The second half started as the first with Lewes rotating players keeping fresh legs on the park and running the ball to good advantage. Harrison Turner then Ben Cutts started to put their bodies in to the game as for a while H&B forwards took control of the game with Archie Meikle and Jake Begg backing up and distributing the ball well. Soon this paid of with Ollie Fisher scoring for H&B. Ollie Fisher and Paddy Pope worked well together as did the centre pairing of Scott Sherwood and James Hirst. Back 3 of Dave Waters Sam Hirst and Jamie Laplin-Place tackling well in defence.
Next week H&B travel to East Grinstead for their first league game.
