Women’s Rugby was first played seriously in Great Britain in the late 1970’s. Early teams were established through the student network and included Keele University, University College of London, Imperial College, York University and St Mary’s Hospital.
Women’s rugby as a sport has gone from strength to strength over recent years and participation is currently at an all time high, and the Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) currently has over 410 Clubs comprising of 170 Senior clubs, 80 student sides, 29 Under 18’s sides, 103 Under 16’s sides and 40 Schools.
Women's rugby starts at an early age in Hastings & Bexhill RFC! We have girls playing in our Mini Rugby teams. At age 12 young women only compete in same sex games and as we do not have sufficient young women to run our own teams have combined with Hellingly and Heathfield & Waldron Rugby clubs to form the H3 Cluster group. This allows them to train as a single unit and to compete with other young Women's teams in the South East of England.
The teams in our league are very supportive of each other, so you can usually find some of our players playing for other teams. The league is made up of ladies who love to play rugby and so we all do our best to try and make sure games go ahead.
Dave Hirst, Club Chairman said at the Annual General Meeting that "... the increased numbers of women playing rugby and the improved playing standard on the pitch is a credit to the coach, the players and has made the women's team a success for our club."
So if you have recently moved into the area and are already a player looking for a new club, or if you fancy trying a new sport come and join Hastings & Bexhill RFC. We would love to see you.
Either contact our Coach or Captain, turn up to training on Wednesday evenings between 7.00 and 8.30, or come and watch a game and speak with someone in the clubhouse afterwards.
