About Women's Rugby

This year (2010) sees the Women's Rugby World Cup (WRWC) come to England and the English team, runners-up in the previous WRWC, are looking to go one better this time. The tournament runs from August 20 to September 5 in London. The Final will be played at Twickenham Stoop, along with the semi finals and bronze final with all other matches played at Surrey Sports Park, a new multi-sport facility which will host all 12 teams for the duration of the tournament. More information can be found by visiting www.rwcwomens.com

Hastings & Bexhill RFC believes that this tournament, almost on our doorstep, will provide a boost for an already vibrant Women's section.

Women’s Rugby was first played seriously in Great Britain in the late 1970’s. Early teams were established through the student network and included Keele University, University College of London, Imperial College, York University and St Mary’s Hospital.

Women’s rugby as a sport has gone from strength to strength over recent years and participation is currently at an all time high, and the Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) currently has over 410 Clubs comprising of 170 Senior clubs, 80 student sides, 29 Under 18’s sides, 103 Under 16’s sides and 40 Schools.

About Hastings & Bexhill RFC Women's Rugby

Women's rugby starts at an early age in Hastings & Bexhill RFC! We have girls playing in our Mini Rugby teams. At age 12  young women only compete in same sex games and as we do not have sufficient young women to run our own teams have combined with Hellingly and Heathfield & Waldron Rugby clubs to form the H3 Cluster group. This allows them to train as a single unit and to compete with other young Women's teams in the South East of England.

Our Women's squad is coached by Andy Wood (contact details below) and he has a Three Year Plan in place. This is aimed at increasing the skill level of individual players and the team as a whole. This is paying dividends with the team winning more matches and having a winning attitude on and off the pitch.

The teams in our league are very supportive of each other, so you can usually find some of our players playing for other teams. The league is made up of ladies who love to play rugby and so we all do our best to try and make sure games go ahead.

Dave Hirst, Club Chairman said at the Annual General Meeting that "... the increased numbers of women playing rugby and the improved playing standard on the pitch is a credit to the coach, the players and has made the women's team a success for our club."

At the start of the 2009/10 season Emma Langley, one of the team stalwarts, applied to O2 for funding as part of O2's "It's Your Community" project. We were fortunate to be awarded £750 to be used for new equipment. A real bonus to start the season with.

So if you have recently moved into the area and are already a player looking for a new club, or if you fancy trying a new sport come and join Hastings & Bexhill RFC. We would love to see you.

Either contact our Coach or Captain, turn up to training on Wednesday evenings between 7.00 and 8.30, or come and watch a game and speak with someone in the clubhouse afterwards.
